Detroit is a national and global design capital and USA’s only UNESCO-designated Design City. This year, Detroit Month of Design’s programming centers on design strategies with the capacity to strengthen community resources and mutual aid. Design Core Detroit’s 12th Annual Detroit Month of Design takes place September 1-30, 2022. Bring your curiosity for this year’s installment, which will feature over 80 events spanning categories ranging from exhibitions, such as the I.M. Weiss Gallery, to the return of Eastern Market After Dark (EMAD), installations, workshops, and many more.

What better place to partake in Detroit Month of Design 2022 than at the nation’s top-ranked school devoted exclusively to graduate education in art, architecture, craft, and design? The Cranbrook Architecture Alumni Show will feature work from Mark Wise, Kapish Cheema, Ben Cook, Elizabeth Ewing, Jessy Slim, Wade Meadors, Zofia Pietrowicz, Daniel Smith, Ryan David, Jing Ying Su, and more. The Master of Architecture program is all things alternative and experimental, inspired by the interdisciplinary context of the Academy and the creative culture of Detroit.

Also at the same location as The Cranbrook Architecture Alumni Show, the Cranbrook Academy of Art 3D Design Department will be hosting the Cranbrook Chair Show. This exhibition of art and design works centers around the subject of the ‘chair’. In continuation of The Academy’s strong tradition of producing iconic chair designs. The exhibition will feature works in all media that offer a potent perspective of the meaning of a chair.

Jumuah at Masjid Al-Earth: Back to the Beginning is an exhibition showcasing artwork by Black
Muslim artists that forced to create in their own homes during the pandemic. The product of this self-isolation and reflection resulted in a brilliant reimagining of how we engage with the community. Explore artwork from Black Muslims and the concept of the Earth being our Masjid. Four walls allow us to create as well as see beyond them.
DETROIT GUCCI CHANGEMAKERS EXHIBITION

Since its launch in 2019, Gucci Changemakers has invested more than $2.5 million in multi-year grant funding to organizations working to promote social good in diverse communities throughout North America. Celebrate the opening of Gucci’s
newest store with the 2022 Gucci Changemakers Scholars exhibition entitled “Building a Lasting Impact” at MOCAD, on view from September 9 until September 11. Curated by Kiana Wenzell, Co-Executive Director of Design Core Detroit, viewers are in for a presentation of application portfolios with this second collaboration with Design Core Detroit. The Gucci Changemakers initiative is to catalyze lasting social change for an inclusive humanity. This should be inspiring for future leaders, considering it focuses on young creatives and social change visionaries.
