The weather is warming, except for its cruel joke of snow on this crisp April Fools Day. As we want less and less to be indoors, and as our schedules begin to fill with outdoor spring activities, the last thing most of us want to do is labor over a hot stove to make dinner for ourselves or our fam. Of course, the best substitute for a home-cooked meal, and a total crowd-pleaser, is pizza—Detroit style. To make it easier the next time you get the craving, here are Detroitisit’s fav pizza shops in the city!
MOOTZ PIZZERIA
Reasonably new to Downtown Detroit, Mootz Pizza is easily one of the best pizza places in the city. Each pie’s thin, crispy crust, fresh ingredients, and beautiful presentation makes for some five-star pies. Mootz offers some classic pizzas, along with a buffalo chicken pie, a lasagne pie, and a fantastic fungi pie, perfect for mushroom lovers. Mootz also serves delicious pasta dishes, scrumptious desserts, and you can’t forget about the garlic knots!
SGT. PEPPERONI’S
Located in the Majestic Theatre, Sgt. Pepperoni’s is the quintessential pizza shop in Midtown. Though grabbing a slice between sets at the venue isn’t necessarily its fulfilled purpose at the moment, picking up a pie serves both as a memoriam of pre-COVID-19 concert times, and a tasty, hassle-free dinner. Sgt. Pepperoni’s also offers vegan cheese as a substitution.
PIE-SCI PIZZA
Pie-Sci is a one-of-a-kind experimental pizza shop that combines flavors, foods, and drizzles galore to create the perfect pizzas. Currently, on their winter menu, they offer a nacho pizza, a mac and cheese pizza, a BLT pizza, and a bunch of other seemingly odd, but absolutely delicious options. It sounds crazy, but for Pie-Sci, it works. Pie-Sci also offers delectable vegetarian and vegan substitutions for all the herbivores out there.
SUPINO PIZZERIA
If you’ve ever wondered what an egg on a pizza tastes like, Supino Pizzeria fulfills that fantasy excellently with the Bismarck pizza. Supino’s is a classic Eastern Market stop, and now with its newly opened New Center location, it’s that much easier to grab a crispy, cheesy pie on your trek down Woodward Ave.
LOUI’S PIZZA
A superb spot for a deep-dish pizza is Hazel Park’s Loui’s Pizza. Loui’s simply never disappoints with crispy and airy crusts, quality toppings, and friendly staff. In terms of Detroit style, they’ve got it down. Loui’s also offers an array of classic Italian pasta dishes, sandwiches, salads, and amazing steak hoagies.
BUDDY’S PIZZA
Nationally recognized for its Detroit-style pizza, Buddy’s Pizza is without a doubt an essential experience for any Detroiter. Crispy, cheesy, perfectly greasy, Buddy’s pumps out pizza perfection after pizza perfection all around the metro area. Locations extend from downtown to Dearborn, Farmington Hills, Warren, and even beyond to cities like Grand Rapids and Lansing. Though mostly known for their pizza, Buddy’s also offers appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, and pasta dishes.
