WE Kayak Grosse Ile First Day

2018 will mark the 6th Season of WE Kayak Grosse Ile. This weekly paddle leaves from the soft kayak launch at Water’s Edge Marina on Grosse Ile. The route on the Detroit River and the canals of Grosse Ile will be dependent on the group and conditions. WE Kayak Grosse Ile is an adult oriented paddle, participants must be 16 or older. All participants under the age of 18 are required to have an adult present on the paddle.

Dates: Group paddle every Tuesday, May 29 – September 4, 2018.

Time: Please be prepared to launch at 6:00 p.m.

Group Paddles are not a tour: we get together to improve our paddling skills, meet new paddling friends and enjoy the time on the water.

Paddling Time: Averages 1.5 hours

Cost: $35 Per Person With Rental Kayak — All RKC kayaks for group paddles are single kayaks. During registration you will be asked for your height and weight so we may bring an appropriate kayak.

Free With Own Kayak — On the Detroit River we require paddlers with their own kayaks to have at least 12′ long and double bulk-headed or sit-on-tops kayaks.

Route Classification: Beginner/Intermediate Paddle – The soft launch, in the protected Bridge Cove, provides for a paddler friendly launch. Paddler should be comfortable in active water due to the potential paddling conditions, caused by wind, waves, current, and boat wake.

Requirements: We ask that all kayaks used on the Detroit River be at least 12′ long and be double bulk-headed or sit-on-tops. If you paddle with RKC, you must have your life jacket on and zipped for the duration of the paddle. Please remember this is a summer sport and bringing water is recommended. These requirements are for your safety and the safety of the group.

Route: Route will vary depending on the group. Potential routes include (but are not limited to) paddling the Thorofare Canal, padding downstream on the Detroit River to Swan Island, or paddling upstream along the west side of Grosse Ile.

Parking: Please park next to the roadside fence. As a courtesy to the boaters in the marina DO NOT park in front of a boat slip or the hoist well.
