What do you get when you combine local art, some of Detroit’s oldest businesses, and a relaxing afternoon near prime shopping, food and drinks? You get the very first Art Park to be located within Detroit’s historic Eastern Market.
Being the product of much community collaboration between Firm Real Estate and some of Eastern Markets oldest businesses, the park, which quietly opened in early July, will be holding its grand opening this Thursday, July 18th. Steps away from many of the most prominent vendors in the area at its Russell Street location, the park features work that ranges from murals to sculpture installations.
Some of those Detroit-based artists include Antonio Agee, aka Shades, whose unique art project allows for visitors to take part in its overall creation. Using paint, Shades Community Art Project will enable visitors the ability to imprint their hand on the wall of the installation. Can’t wait to see what your handprint looks like!
Steinkopf Nursery, a fifth-generation family business operating in Eastern Market, brought a fresh and creative perspective to the market they have called home since they first opened their doors in the 1920s. The Art Parks programming has also been applauded by some of the vendors who have called Eastern Market home for generations.
“Art Park is next door and is very significant to the growth of my business and to Eastern Market as a whole,” said Bert Dearing, owner of the historic Bert’s Marketplace. “Thank you to the partners at Firm Real Estate for making this spot a reality. The park is an amazing gift from Firm to the entrepreneurs, artists, vendors, and visitors of Eastern Market.”
Currently, the hours of operation for the park are Thursday 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. This schedule is expected to continue into the fall months and well beyond.
