SAIL DETROIT FESTIVAL (EVENT PASSED AUGUST 8-10)

Although it already passed over this last weekend, this festival is worth mentioning because it’s a chance for the public to view ships they otherwise wouldn’t see regularly. Sponsored by the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, Sail Detroit is a family-friendly festival that showcases tall ships from around the world. The Sail Detroit 2001 event began as a celebration of Detroit’s tricentennial, and the monumental moment made its return. The event honors Detroit’s maritime history by providing public access to tall ships and education about the city’s waterfront and its visiting ships. The ships visit Detroit in August as a part of the Great Lakes Challenge, organized by Tall Ships America. It takes place at the Detroit Riverwalk in front of the Port Authority.
