Are you ready for the 13th annual Detroit Month of Design Festival this September 2023? There’s plenty of community involvement happening all throughout the month of September. This year’s theme is United by Design. Let’s support the city’s rich history and cultural landscape as it continues to grow and elevate communities, which in turn, helps increase the city’s economic growth.
Did you know that Detroit is the only UNESCO City of Design in the United States? Join the numerous creatives, events, and other excited attendees (50,000 from last year) as we celebrate design in all forms throughout the month in various Detroit neighborhoods. We’re highlighting some of the best, so you can mark your calendars now.

DESIGN STUDIO 6 DESIGN SYNERGY OPEN STUDIO
Date & time: Saturday, Sep. 9, 1 – 6 PM-Saturday, Sep. 23
First up on this list of gallery events in Detroit 2023 is the Design Open Studio in the inner city. Creatives and the Detroit community are welcome to engage in this design studio space that hosts private events, exhibits, workshops, and collaborative meetings, especially during the Month of Design. Design Synergy Open Studio will feature an interior art exhibit during the month. Make sure to also stop by on September 16 and September 23rd for interactive workshops presented by local and residential designers. You’ll even create a mood board! DETROIT MONTH OF DESIGN OPENING PARTY AND DESIGN CRAWL
Date & Time: Friday, September 1st from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Next up on this list of events in Detroit to celebrate Design Core Month of Design 2023 is the kick-off of the festivities. Presented by the Consulate of Italy with additional support from Downtown Detroit Partnership, join The Downtown Detroit Design Crawl in celebration of designers, products, and projects that showcase the city’s creative talent (i.e. Mike Han and Sydney James) and small businesses we love. I.M WEISS GALLERY
Next up on this list of events in Detroit to attend for Detroit Month of Design 2023 events is this extraordinary gallery will present two concurrent exhibitions oriented around design: Ergo<ITSELF>, a solo exhibition featuring Detroit-based artist Paula Schubatis, and TITLE TK, a collaborative exhibition of new work by Nina Cho and Minji Namkoong.

WASSERMAN PROJECTS
Detroiters can appreciate more from the local Detroit gallery hotspots they love this month, especially the more unconventional like The Wasserman Projects! This unique gallery space will present a dual show for their Fall 2023 exhibition, featuring work by Chicago, IL based photographer Laura Letinsky, and Sheboygan Falls, WI based glass artist Beth Lipman.

DESIGN JAM
Date: Friday and Saturday, September 8th & 9th, 2023
The word ‘jams’ might make you think of music, especially in Detroit. However, this 2nd annual, two-day event intends to unify interdisciplinary teams to create athletic recreation solutions for members of the limb-loss community. The Design Jam does this through integrating product innovation into a collective space where everyone has a say in how the process can evolve. This is a hands-on product innovation workshop. BLCKOUT WALLS BLOCK PARTY
Date & Time: Saturday, September 16th from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm
This list of events in Detroit to celebrate Detroit Month of Design 2023 wouldn’t be complete without a party! Don’t miss this biannual, family-friendly event celebrating art and community. The BLKOUT Walls Block Party consists of panel discussions, pop-up art exhibitions, artists talks, DJ lineup, food, and vendors.
