It’s not all rainbows, but this month it is! There are wonderful lists of Pride Month events to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. The journey to equality requires continued action and visibility. Take time to look into LGBTQ+ centers in Detroit and the greater area that directly support both youth and adult members of all kinds.
What better place to celebrate than in the Motor City? After all, Michigan’s first LGBTQ+ Pride event was held in Detroit in 1972 to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969. Enjoy a month-long Motor City celebration filled with parades, festivals, and a series of other events in Metro Detroit this June. To kick off summer and the joys of June Pride Month, Detroitisit rounded up a special list of LGBTQ+ centers in Detroit the greater Detroit area to make sure the local love is spread a little extra.
MOVIE NIGHTS IN THE D SHOWING OF “LOVE, SIMON”

Supporting LGBTQ+ centers in Detroit and beyond this year involves a good movie! Presented by Capital One Café and supported by Faygo, the Downtown Detroit Partnership is bringing back its popular Movie Nights in the D series featuring FREE movies on the lawn at Campus Martius Park. The 2023 season kicks off June 7 with a showing of “Love, Simon” in support of Pride Month. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation of gently used summer clothes and/or bottled water to support the Ruth Ellis Center, a Detroit-area organization that provides trauma-informed services for LGBTQ+ youth, especially minority youth and those experiencing homelessness.

LGBT DETROIT
Help push the boundaries by joining movements that are expansive, not only in their messages, but actual size. This list of LGBTQ+ centers in Detroit (and Metro Detroit), wouldn’t be complete without North America’s Largest Black Founded & Led LGBT Non-Profit. Their mission is to to provide a space (I.e #SafeBraveSpace) to cultivate more strong voices. They proudly do so by activating, amplifying, and sustaining LGBT+ culture, education, advocacy, and human rights. Founded in 1994, LGBT Detroit is the sole organizer of Hotter Than July, a multi-day black LGBT pride celebration and social justice rally put together by community-member volunteers since 1996. GRAND RAPIDS PRIDE CENTER
Empowerment is a common theme among these LGBTQ+ centers in Detroit and beyond. Take a look at this next center that’s going above & beyond. The Grand Rapids Pride Center offers multiple social & support groups, creating safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ community members. FTM DETROIT
There can never be enough LGBTQ+ centers/resources in Detroit and the state of Michigan. Check out
FtM Detroit, a community-based group made by and for transmasculine identified people in the greater Detroit andjune Southeast Michigan area. This collective has a goal to unify and strengthen transmasculine identified people in the area through community support groups & discussions as well as other social gatherings and activism projects. Essentially, they’re a community organization devoted to creating a safe space in which trans men in the greater Detroit area can thrive and be seen in a positive light. AFFIRMATIONS, FERNDALE
Detroiters know the city of Ferndale is a friendly neighbor. If you’re looking for more LGBTQ+ centers in Detroit to support and/or get involved with, then check out Affirmations, Ferndale. Founded in 1989, this space has been a hub for southeast Michigan LGBTQ+ communities and it’s allies for the last 30 years. All sexual orientations, cultures, and gender identities and expressions can find support and unconditional acceptance here. Join LGBTQ+ Community Center as they host the most anticipated Pride event of the season! Prom ReDeux is on Saturday, June 24 from 8 pm – 12 am. $30 per ticket.
