Pope Park sits on a tiny little plot, sandwiched between a pizza joint and a bar.
It’s officially known as Karol Wojtyla Hamtramck Park, but it’s always been Pope Park. By the time Pope John Paul II visited Hamtramck for the second time in 1987, there was already a Pope John Paul II bookstore in the working class Polish enclave, so the next step was to build a park and statue commemorating his visit. There’s also a lovely little mural depicting traditional Polish dancers in the square. Witamy—Welcome—to Hamtramck!
