For This City, Lions Football is More Than Just a Game

How the Lions’ Historic Season United and Uplifted Detroit

The Detroit Lions had another fabulous season that came to an unexpected end on Saturday night – and it stings. Bad.

But what a run it was.

To end the season at 15 wins and two losses is absolutely commendable. This is a team that’s turned itself around – and the fans and the city right along with it.

Alongside Detroit’s revitalization, this underdog team has not only captured the hearts of local fans but also the nation’s attention. With their relentless grit, talent and a “manifest it until it happens” attitude, the Lions have become a symbol of hope and pride for a city that knows all too well the feeling of defeat and desolation, and the power of resilience.

Detroit has been shining brightly in countless ways: as a global leader in electric vehicle innovation and manufacturing, a pioneer in sustainability efforts, and a city celebrated for achievements like the Detroit Riverwalk being named the nation’s best three years in a row.

The city is redefining itself with projects such as the restoration of Michigan Central, the Hudson’s site redevelopment, the revitalization of the Book Tower, and more. Neighborhoods and communities are being reinvigorated with vital funding for rebuilding and rejuvenation. And while the Lions season has come to an end, it helped to fuel the fire behind the renewed sense hope – and also connection – across the city.

“The Lions’ victories have been transformative for Detroit,” says Amy Peterson, Co-Owner of Rebel Nell who’s developed a collaboration with the Detroit Lions to craft commemorative jewelry and other pieces. “They’ve reinvigorated the city with a renewed sense of pride and optimism, uniting fans and businesses alike in a shared celebration of success. It’s more than football; it’s a testament to what Detroit stands for: strength, perseverance, and a bright future.”

Businesses across the city have certainly reaped the benefits of Lions fever, having hosted watch parties, themed products, and unique collaborations. Bars and restaurants were packed with fans donning Honolulu blue and silver, coming together in unity and celebration.

“The Lions season this year impacted our business in a way we could only dream of as Lions fans,” said Dewitt Moore, Co-Owner of 3 Kings Sports Cards. “Being downtown in the heart of it all allowed us to really feel the energy surrounding the city. It also gave us the opportunity to do events centered around Lions games like tailgates we hosted here at our store where we were able to give back to the community.”

For Rebel Nell, their exclusive collection has gotten a lot of attention while helping to drive their mission. “Fans wanted to commemorate this historic season with something meaningful, and it’s helped us further our mission of empowering women through art and opportunity.”

Detroit’s food scene got in on the action as well. Mootz Pizzeria rolled out Honolulu blue-themed pizzas featuring blue-dyed pineapple, with proceeds from each sale supporting the Detroit Lions Foundation. Elephant and Co. introduced a Honolulu Blue BBQ pizza to their menu, while Detroit Water Ice Factory offered collectible Lions popcorn tins.

“The Lions’ season has positively impacted our business by lifting everyone’s mood, which in turn, made people more generous in supporting the SAY Detroit Foundation,” said Annette Hill, Director of Operations for Detroit Water Ice Factory. “I have seen the positive effect on Detroit in the smiles on people’s faces and the connections made. Morale has truly been up.”

Events sprung up all across the city, too. The Detroit Auto Show recently hosted a rally featuring Lions alumni and Grammy-nominated Detroit artist Mike Posner. Tailgates, bar crawls, watch parties and even cookie decorating classes served to bring people together among shared hopes and passions.

“The Lions season definitely has impacted Detroit in a great way,” said Shirelle Stowers of the Lip Bar. “Our customer base definitely has the spirit.”

This season brought Detroiters together in ways that go far beyond the games at Ford Field. It inspired hope, boosted economic activity, and united communities across the city and metro area. For decades, Lions fans have endured the heartbreak of loss after loss, but the team is getting exponentially better, giving us hope for next season now.

“This remarkable winning streak created incredible momentum for both the team and our business,” says Peterson. “This season has elevated Rebel Nell’s visibility while also cementing the connection between Detroit pride, the Lions’ resilience, and our shared commitment to uplifting the community.”

In the end, for Detroit, this season was about wins on – and off the field.

From our football team to our businesses, leaders, and residents, Detroit continues to show the world what it truly means to rise together, celebrate together, and move forward with unmatched grit and pride.

Until next season, Detroit Lions!
