Detroit is without a doubt a uniquely beautiful backdrop for photos of any kind. From engagement to graduation to just some casual photos for your Insta, this city is armed with an array of old architecture, murals, brickwork, and greenspaces that will pop the background of any photo you take. Of course, knowing the best spots is a vital thing, so here are some of Detroitisit’s favorite spots to snap a photo of our friends, family, and maybe even a selfie or two!

PARKER’S ALLEY

There’s something about Parker’s Alley that gives a photo such a classic feeling. The simple red-brick walkway and black brick walls keep the eye trained forward and the plants and greenery dotting the alleyway soften the area giving it just enough flavor to spice up a photo. The alleyway was only recently refinished, and it offers many attractions and shops for photo props. Grab a bouquet from Flowers for Dreams or an iced, oat milk miel from Madcap Coffee to add some local flair to your alleyway pics!

THE BELT

The Belt is definitely a more well-known alley in Detroit, but it never disappoints in terms of fun or photos. Bright murals, glasswork, and other art installations give it such an artistic and through-and-through Detroit feel as you walk down the alleyway. Due to the Belt’s numerous murals, each photo you take will be vastly different from the one before, making this locale an excellent one-stop shop. And while you’re there, don’t forget to look up!

THE DETROIT RIVERFRONT

Named America’s number one riverfront in 2021 by USA Today, Detroit’s riverfront is simply a beautiful photo-snapping location. Similar to the Belt, the riverfront has numerous backdrops that work excellently for photos, so take some time to explore the expansive area to find the best place for the shot you want.

THE Z LOT

On the Z Lot’s 10th floor, high above the city, yet right in the middle of it, makes for one of the best spots in the city to take a picture. From the city-scape backgrounds to the colorful murals throughout the garage, it serves as an excellently vibrant backdrop. As you snap your photos, you may just catch a whiff or two of freshly made pizza, wafting up from Mootz Pizzeria, coaxing you back down to the structure’s ground floor for a slice and an ice-cold cocktail.

BELLE ISLE CONSERVATORY

Belle Isle is a warm weather favorite for Detroiters throughout, which makes it a fantastic spot to both spend the day and grab some pics. The Conservatory on the island makes for an uber-cute, and gorgeously textured background. Either utilizing the unique dome structure of the Conservatory itself, or the plants and vines throughout the area give photos an exotic feeling, without distracting too much from the main subject in your photos.

BELLE ISLE FOUNTAIN

Another favorite Belle Isle spot is its picturesque fountain. Whether you’re a fan of Friends and the theme song scenes of them splashing in the fountain or not, fountains just have that splashy, fun-by-the-water appeal. Of course, there are so many other great spots on the Isle to grab some snapshots, so why not pack a picnic and make a day of it?

THE DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS

There’s something to be said about an art museum that is outwardly as stunning and attractive as the DIA is. It’s simple yet

elegant marble and white stone exterior make for a perfectly textured background for whatever the outfit—no worries on clashing with your surroundings there! The Institute is also complete with multiple sets of outdoor stairs, giving an excellent opportunity for elevated looks and avant-garde angles. And of course, after the shots have been captured, step inside for some AC and let your breath be taken away by all that the DIA has to offer.
