Mental Health Awareness Month is rising for another year of getting down to business. Mental Health Awareness Month in Detroit is a time to support one another and spread love & compassion with updated knowledge on the various mental health issues Americans specifically face. Since 1949, the month of May continues to be nationally recognized as an observed month of mental health coverage across media, local events, film screenings, educational programs & resources, and extra vocalization to help break the stigma.

This month of events in Detroit and Metro Detroit will be engaging for various ages, specifically adults who are discussing these topics more. Lead younger generations into tackling tough topics with more fun and unified understanding as community organizations step up to provide resources as well as public social gatherings. Be a changemaker and advocate for better mental health resources for all. This month is also an excellent time to volunteer and be of service to help you feel like you have a purpose in life and are useful to society.

Detroitisit rounded up an annual list of in-person events and informative basics/tips that should help guide you through this Mental Health Awareness Month in Detroit & beyond.

OVERALL MENTAL HEALTH RECOVERY BLUEPRINT: KNOW THE FOUR MAJOR DIMENSIONS THAT SUPPORT A LIFE OF RECOVERY

This list of events and other educational resources for participating in Mental Health Awareness Month in Detroit pertains to the Detroit community involvement. However, it’s good to go over some basic knowledge that everyone can take away from this month as a whole. Mental health is an umbrella term for all that makes up our well-being and how we respond to/handle situations and experiences at any stage of life. This includes our emotional, social, and psychological makeup. Managing our mental health is a necessary growth process we learn from as we start out as children and mature into adolescence through adulthood.

Here are some recovery tips according to general research:

1. Health-Do your part and take responsibility for the smaller daily actions that compound into healthier habits. Your physical and emotional health are tied to your everyday choices.

2. Home-A strong foundation can help us move through the motions of life without getting stagnant. Safety and stability are core needs even as we age.

3. Purpose-Put your energy into something where you can directly see the impact you’ve made and are continuing to make. Set your mind to something each day and engage in meaningful activities, including ones where you’re helping others as well. Work towards ways of having your own independence and serving the greater community.

4. Community-Build relationships and social networks that provide support.
