Voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, November 4 to vote for mayor, city council, city clerk and board of police commissioners in the General Elections. GENERAL 2025 DETROIT ELECTIONS & VOTING INFO FOR DETROIT VOTERS
Detroitisit’s voting guide for this year’s election begins with informing everyone that a voter must be a Michigan resident to vote in Detroit elections. Voters in Detroit taking part in the general write-in this October must be registered for the city’s general election, which will take place in November 2025.
Election Dates:
Filing deadline: April 22, 2025
July 25, 2025 (primary write-in)
October 24, 2025 (general write-in)
Primary election: August 5, 2025
General election: November 4, 2025
Offices up: Mayor, city clerk, city council, board of police commissioners, and community advisory council.

ELECTION DATES

October is the time to participate and prepare for November. Detroitisit’s voting registration guide for this year’s election invites everyone to get to know both mayoral candidates and hear what they have to say. Mayor Mike Duggan announced he would not be seeking reelection, so this year brings extra attention to the mayoral race. What issues would you like to see city leaders address in 2026?
Here are the two mayoral candidates running for Detroit mayor in the 2025 primary:
Mary Sheffield–age: 37 Mary Sheffield is the Detroit City Council president, representing District 5. A graduate of Southfield-Lathrup High School, Sheffield grew up on the westside of Detroit and is taking her roots with her to speak up on issues for Detroit residents. Her heart lies in addressing root causes of crime as well as restoring neighborhoods through economic development and homeownership. Solomon Kinloch Jr.-age: 52 Solomon Kinloch is an American pastor and political candidate. He is the senior pastor of Triumph Church, a non-denominational megachurch based in Detroit. The NAACP Detroit Branch is hosting an event you won’t want to miss. The campaign has engaged voters across the city of Detroit for over 20 years. Not to mention, gained nationwide attention and has been replicated in many other NAACP units. Join the Detroit Branch for the Take Your Soles to the Polls campaign in the City of Detroit. Launched under the leadership of their president in 1997, Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony, the four pillars of the campaign are:
- Registration – expanding the electorate
- Education – knowing your voting rights
- Mobilization – encouraging voter participation in elections
- Protection – ensuring all votes are counted
