Detroit legend and overall awesome person, Allee Willis, passed away at the age of 72 just as 2019 was closing its door. To honor the memory of one of the cities most talented artists, nonprofit, Empty Bowls Detroit and Detroit singer-songwriter, Apropos, have teamed up for an event to raise money in Willis’s memory.
The event will be taking place in Shed 5 of Eastern Market on Sunday, February 9th, and those who attend will have the opportunity to paint a bowl while also enjoying a meal of soup. Admission to the event does include a $20 donation, which will cover the cost of food, a bowl, as well as a live performance from Apropos.
The artist, who has a close relationship with Willis, was quoted in the listing for the event stating, “You can’t be an artist from Detroit and not give back.”
The event builds off of Apropos comments since all proceeds raised will be going to benefit Cass Community Social Services. Based in Detroit, the nonprofit works to assist people living in poverty-stricken areas by providing food, housing, health care and assistance finding a job.
According to the Facebook event description, some of the bowls painted by those who attend will be auctioned off at a later date to raise additional funds for Empty Bowls Detroit in memory of Allee Willis. Both Apropos and Empty Bowls will then be collaborating again in March for a similar event in Eastern Market.
For those interested in attending to pay tribute to Willis, tickets may be reserved here.
