MLK Day 2022 is looking good for museum activities. Free museum events in Detroit are ringing in the new year with inspiration. These events also highlight the challenging moments in history. Civil rights demands to be seen and heard within the black community are evident. Just look at the recent continuation of BLM protests. Basically, the human race still has evolving to do. Collectively, we are being called out to recognize individuals that are from different minority backgrounds.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr needs no introduction. In short, he was a courageous leader in a time where it was a definite risk to revolt against the masses. His speeches are the cornerstone for intelligent activism. King’s authentic life that led to revolution deserves a celebration each year.
Detroitsit rounded up a list of free museum admissions both in and around Detroit. Learn something new about the true King for MLK Day 2022.
DETROIT HISTORICAL MUSEUM
The city of Detroit proudly supports the black community and its businesses. They also know how to keep African American history alive. Celebrate MLK day 2022 A.K.A Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 87th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the “MLK Day: Give Us the Ballot ” event on Monday, January 17, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Detroit Historical Museum.
Get the family together for this FREE event, celebrating Dr. King’s life and legacy. It’s an open-minded, educational day of activities. Visitors can participate in voter registration, a project for kids, as well as listen to an expert on the importance of registering to vote. Kids will make their own ‘mock’ voter registration card and receive MLK worksheets and coloring pages.

CHARLES H WRIGHT MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY
Check out their special hours for MLK Day 2022. The Museum is open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm on Monday, January 17th, 2022. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children. A lot of families will have the kids home on the 17th. You can still have fun while taking advantage of the learning opportunity. Might as well immerse them in the country’s first museum for African American History. The museum’s permanent and visiting exhibitions are worth it year-round, but they leave extra space for reflection on MLK Day. The Wright Museum inspires visitors to acknowledge the strength in unity and acceptance by informing everyone on all of the sides of African-American history.
DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS
Not up for walking around? Sink into rare footage of Dr. King’s speeches, protests, and arrests. They’re interspersed with commentary from high-profile supporters of the cause. The showing of King: A Filmed Record… Montgomery to Memphis is at 1 PM on Mon, Jan 17, 2022, at the Detroit Film Theatre. Anyone that gets wrapped up in historical documentaries should enjoy it. MLK Day 2022 at the DIA will give viewers something new they may not have seen or read before. Follow Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from 1955 to 1968 as he rises from regional activist to world-renowned leader of the Civil Rights movement.
THE HENRY FORD (DEARBORN)
The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn is celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the civil rights leaders who moved our nation forward with unwavering courage knotted by peace. They’re offering a free day of inspiration at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation on January 17, 2022. Enjoy your time, but also your safety. Capacity will be limited and monitored at the door. If capacity is reached, please be prepared for entry delays or queues.
View the Rosa Parks Bus and listen to the story of her brave act. Make your statement in the interactive program Minds on Freedom, highlighting the contributions of Dr. King, Mrs. Parks, and civil rights champions like the Freedom Riders. Then explore the uphill battle of American freedom in the exhibit With Liberty and Justice for All.

Cranbrook Institute of Science (Bloomfield Hills)
