Detroitisit’s guide to Detroit Month of Design is giving a spotlight to the installations that are now up and/or will be up over the course of this month as well as other not-to-miss displays & exhibits. The much celebrated Detroit Month of Design is back for its 16th edition with a magnificent lineup of interactive & engaging events to be a part of all throughout the month of September. Organized by Design Core Detroit, Detroit remains the only UNESCO-designated City of Design in the United States. 

Detroit is a fitting place to take flight for this special month. Across the city, you can expect to experience exhibitions, workshops, tours, product launches, innovation, and more community collaborations that focus on the forward-thinking movement of raw creativity. “More” is the norm this month in terms of open studios, meetings/conversations with local artists, talks on reshaping the places surrounding us, and more. Detroit is driving itself in style. Witness installations that speak on geographical cross-border topics, sports history, cars, cultural fashion, and more.

The theme for this year’s Detroit Month of Design is “Design Moves the Future.” See how innovation in the design sector can address future concerns. Join in on the major excitement as there are 100 events already taking place/underway throughout the city from September 1 to 30., showcasing how design can innovate and address future challenges

The party has already kicked off at the LANTERN and Little Village Design Crawl. No worries if you missed the opening celebration in the past week. Your weekends and week days/evenings are going to be filled with competitive choices for you to be involved in! Most events are free and open to the public.

“BETWEEN YOUR LOVE & MINE” INSTALLATION

Detroitisit’s guide to Detroit Month of Design is a literal spreading of love just like what you’ll witness physically when you immerse yourself in the explorations of what is available for viewing publicly out in the community, specifically the several local installations in Detroit. “Between Your Love & Mine” had its opening display on September 3, and it’s up through the end of the month! The Architecture and Design installation is located in Little Village & features work from UNDECORATED, SOCA, OSD+ & Castor Design. The Detroit River connects us to Canada, which is just a slice of the inspiration. Themes include: Borders, Community and Kinship by Writer and Curator Stefan Novakovic.

Get ready for “Cars at The Station.” Bring your best pair of eyes to witness this display that focuses on the “future-forward look at the tech, mobility, and culture of the Motor City. “BORN IN SEPIA” IMMERSIVE FASHION EXPERIENCE + INSTALLATION

“Born in Sepia” is on Detroitist’s Guide to Detroit Month of Design for all of the local art & fashion lovers. Be present for this “immersive fashion experience and cultural installation, cherishing black cultural influences as well as the functionalities of a runway show. Memory also plays a part in each garment. Beyond the runway, the experience expands into a multi-sensory environment featuring a storefront installation with merchandise, archival displays, and wearable works. This event is part of the IDeate Cultural Arts Festival, an accessible event held over multiple days.

SCORE: SPORTS BY DESIGN

Detroitisit’s guide to Detroit Month of Design gives a taste of the variety that’s in store this September. Yes, sports get their moment as well. The Museum of Design Detroit’s SCORE: Sports by Design exhibition is on view now and it dives into Southeast Michigan/Detroit’s history of sports and the vast ecosystem of engagement within sports in these areas as it often starts in the neighborhoods as recreation. Not to mention, it begins as part of the culture here in Detroit with the capabilities of further professional athletic development in Michigan.

Location: third floor in the Language and Literature Department-Main Detroit Public Library.
