In Birmingham, a city known for its established retail and wellness landscape, Aya Restrepo is building something distinct – a space that blends medical expertise, creativity, and a thoughtful approach to how people experience beauty and aging.
Restrepo is the owner and CEO of Glam Jail, a medical spa shaped as much by her surgical training as by her artistic perspective. Rather than positioning aesthetics as correction, she approaches it as refinement – identifying what already works and enhancing it carefully and responsibly.
“I wanted to create a space that celebrates aging while waking people up to enjoy life,” she says. “We’re blessed to be alive. It’s not about fearing aging – it’s about looking as good as you can at any age.”
Restrepo’s path to opening Glam Jail didn’t begin in beauty. She trained as a surgical physician assistant, attending the University of Detroit Mercy’s PA program before completing residency training at Johns Hopkins and later working in cardiac surgery at the University of Michigan. The clinical precision of that environment shaped how she approaches her work today.

“I’ve always loved working with my hands and I’ve always seen beauty in the world,” she says. “To me, beauty is a kind of power.”
After years in surgical settings, she transitioned into aesthetic medicine, performing procedures such as mini facelifts across multiple clinics. But over time, she realized she wanted a different kind of environment — one that was more intentional.
That vision became Glam Jail.
Restrepo describes Detroit’s aesthetic market as crowded in some ways but surprisingly narrow in others. Many clinics, she says, focus primarily on injectables. Her goal was to build something broader and more holistic.
“We’re not a Botox house,” she explains. “We focus on working on the canvas first — skin health, sun damage, tone, structure — and then, if needed, injectables are the finishing touch, not the foundation.”
Her approach emphasizes gradual change, patient education, and individualized care plans. Consultations often include detailed skin analysis and long-term treatment mapping rather than quick procedures. She says that slower, more deliberate work often produces results that look more natural and feel more empowering.
“There are so many treatments out there, and people can feel overwhelmed,” she says. “I like to guide clients step by step, so they understand their options and feel confident in their decisions.”
Restrepo also spends time correcting misconceptions about what medical spas actually are. Many clients, she notes, assume all spa environments offer similar services, when in reality the qualifications of providers can vary widely.

GLAM JAIL EXAM ROOM
“Once you’re breaking the skin, you should know who’s treating you and what their medical background is,” she says. “A true medical spa means you’re being cared for by a medical professional. Safety and ethics come first.”
That emphasis on responsibility shapes her patient philosophy, particularly with younger clients. While she treats adults of all ages, she’s cautious about over-treatment.
“If we do too much too early, you can end up with 20-year-olds looking 40 and 40-year-olds looking 20,” she says. “Part of my job is to be ethical and say no when it’s the right decision.”
The name Glam Jail often sparks curiosity before clients even walk through the door. Restrepo says it was inspired by an art series that explored beauty’s influence — both its power and its limits.
“It’s a playful name,” she says. “But it’s really about breaking free from whatever is holding you back. We want people to leave feeling joyful, not confined by expectations.”
That philosophy extends to the space itself. Glam Jail doubles as a rotating creative environment, featuring collaborations with artists and a design aesthetic meant to feel more like a welcoming home than a clinical office.
“A successful visit means someone feels understood, informed, and happy,” she says. “They should know their options, understand their plan, and feel comfortable just being here — even if they come in for coffee.”
Launching a business without a family background in entrepreneurship required what Restrepo calls “grit with humor.” Like many founders, she’s navigated hiring, market shifts, and the challenge of building awareness simultaneously.
“Everything has been a learning curve,” she says. “You have to stay positive and keep going.”
Her core audience, she’s found, tends to be women over 35 who want expert care but also want to feel respected, not pressured. Word of mouth has been the strongest driver of growth so far — something she views as validation.

AYA RESTREPO CUSTOM COAT
“When referrals come in, that brings me joy,” she says. “It means people trust you.”
Inside the same space, Restrepo recently launched another creative venture: a made-to-measure coat line featuring hand-dyed fabrics, European textiles, and limited-edition designs. Though separate from the spa’s services, she sees it as connected to the same mission.
“Fashion is another form of art that helps people feel good about themselves,” she says. “I wanted pieces that are unique, not mass-produced — something that can be kept and passed down.”
The garments are produced in small runs using materials sourced from international artisans, including Italian cashmere and French wool, and sold through private fittings or limited releases. Like her approach to aesthetics, the emphasis is on individuality rather than trends.
As Glam Jail continues to grow, Restrepo says her priority isn’t scale for its own sake but strengthening relationships with clients and expanding offerings thoughtfully.
“What matters most is helping people feel good and feel cared for,” she says. “That’s the driving force.”
Future plans include additional pop-up events, expanded services, and continued integration of art and fashion into the experience — always anchored by the same guiding idea that shaped the business from the beginning: beauty isn’t about perfection, but about recognizing and supporting what already exists.
