Today was supposed to be a celebratory day for the Detroit Tigers, one that garners tradition in Metro Detroit, and specifically, Downtown Detroit.
We love our Baseball, and even more so, we love Opening Day. It is a makeshift holiday, one in which Suburbanites and Detroiters alike flock to the Downtown area, take off work, participate in wild parties, tailgating, and more. Bars are packed to the gills, bumping music, offering drink specials. Organizations and radio stations set up shop around Comerica Park with activations and fun for the whole family.
What I’m trying to express is this: It is a party. A big one. And it takes over the entire city. And nobody does it quite like Detroit.
Obviously, COVID-19 has caused this celebration to take a backseat, but fans of the Detroit Tigers will not take that lightly. Fans have been using the hashtag called #TigersOpeningStay in which they’re celebrating at home, wearing their Detroit D gear, in order to keep up morale while “flattening the curve.”
Obviously Baseball is not happening today, but we’ll be damned if we miss out on the celebration despite this virus. It’s the resilience of Detroiters, the spirit of the city, which creates an energy like no other.
So, if you’re chilling at your “crib” (most of us are), dig out your gear and salute the tradition. Snap some pics for Instagram. Maybe even make some Nachos or a Vegan Hot Dog! We deserve this little sunspot and the love that surrounds its glory, even if it’s not happening officially.
