Celebrate the “head of the year” with Detroitisit’s 2024 Rosh Hashanah guide to know what to expect for this year’s Rosh Hashanah in Detroit and nearby. Rosh Hashanah/Rosh HaShanah begins at sundown on the eve of Tishrei 1 on October 2, 2024 and ends after nightfall on Tishrei 2 on October 4, 2024.
When we think of the holidays, we typically think of winter and the NYE, but there is a new year even earlier for those in the Jewish community. Being Jewish in Detroit is not all that common, but it is comforting to know Metro Detroit holds the space for several people that practice Judaism. The neighborly unity provides an extending sense of community for those that remain in Detroit.

LEARN MORE ABOUT ROSH HASHANAH
When Rosh Hashanah Begins: Evening of Wednesday, October 2, 2024-Friday, October 4, 2024
Every year, it’s helpful to relay information regarding Rosh Hashanah in Detroit and beyond, so that the Jewish community in Detroit and Metro Detroit feels at peace.
The celebration origin’s significance lies in the Jewish new year falling at the beginning of the month of Tishrei. Tishrei is the seventh month of the Jewish year. The Hebrew month of Nisan (a month of miracles & redemption) occurs in the spring, leading up to this current time of elation as well as deep introspection that encourages those to reflect on their life’s journey.
In Judaism, Yom Kippur is also on the horizon as it is the tenth day of the new year (Friday, October 11, 2024) beginning at sunset as it follows Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah is essentially the start of The High Holy Days and the Days of Repentance. This is a time to go within and observe, which includes women and girls lighting candles in the evenings.
Traditional celebrations include: prayer/attending services in synagogue, shofar, apples, honey, challah and more.
