Shalom! September is the month of annual festivals in Detroit and beyond. Rosh Hashanah 2023 (the Jewish New Year) in Detroit is here. We’re providing information to help you know where to celebrate and observe the High Holidays following Rosh Hashanah. This Jewish day of judgment begins Friday, September 15 at sunset and ends Sunday, September 17 at nightfall.

Detroitisit rounded up a list of details and events for families to participate in as the Jewish Detroit Community heads into a refreshing new year. 

 

SHABBAT CANDLE LIGHTINGS FOR DETROIT 

First up on this guided list of Rosh HaShanah in Detroit are the candlelight blessings (Shabbat). Shabbat candles must be lit before sunset. Shabbat began on Sunday, August 17, 2023, and the 18th. Candle lighting is followed by a Torah reading. There are particular Shabbat times as those observing this holiday know that Shabbat candles must be lit before sunset. ROSH HASHANAH CHALLAH BAKE WITH THE CHALLAH PRINCE (*SOLD OUT)

Date & Time: Thursday, September 7 at 6:30 P.M

The Well, OneTable Detroit, Repair the World and NEXTGen Detroit Presents Rosh HaShanah Challah Bake that’s already sold out! This event reached its maximum capacity for the space utilized. However, you can still sign up for the Waitlist with the free Waitlist ticket HEREDetroit welcomes Challah Prince, Idan Chabasov (@challahprince on Instagram) to show off his skills at the pre-Rosh HaShanah challah bake! participants are asked to bring a challah baking ingredient of their choice to donate to the Detroit Community Fridge

BUY THE BEST CHALLAH IN DETROIT 

Still looking for your authentic Challah in Detroit this Rosh HaShanah 2023? There are several options that qualify as the best spots for Challah bread in Detroit and nearby. Shatila Bakery in Dearborn is the latest hotspot in the area, which is located at 14300 W Warren Ave, Dearborn. Date & Time: Sunday, September 10, 2023 at 5 P.M

Although the event itself is not held in Detroit, it is hosted by Aish Detroit (Aish Hatorah Detroit).  Aish Hatorah Detroit strengthens the Jewish Family and ultimately creates community. DONATE TO A DETROIT JEWISH COMMUNITY ORG/NON-PROFIT

To get in the true High Holiday spirit, you can always donate to Detroit Jewish Community organizations. To better foster diversity and strengthen the Detroit community, it’s important to stay informed about all of the residents that have made a home in Detroit

Where to donate/get involved: There are events, resources, and plenty of ways to give & get involved. Not to mention, the younger generations/young Jewish adults in Detroit could use support as well. Downtown Synagogue is a great place to feel connected to others within the Jewish community in Detroit.
