Spring cleaning is in full effect. Bring earthly beauty and much-needed organization/reorganization to your home & living space, so it inspires more. What are you doing to help the planet look better? The annual Earth Day is on April 22 and it’s a global movement to get involved with. Help clean the waterways and much more.
The love and care for the planet starts with our own practices. Get involved in conservation and make it a community effort! Individuals get smarter with each year on how to efficiently minimize the junk that’s cluttering their life and attaching to our minds. Spring yard cleanups and planting of the new is a refreshing way to spend time outside in nature.
At the end of the day, get rid of things you feel called to these next few months. Get the family involved in sustainable and ethical home cleaning practices as well as spring cleanups in the city and neighborhood. Donate the piles of clothes and other gently used items to places you’ve researched and trusted. Goodwill of Greater Detroit (“more than a thrift store“) has some direct tips and facts mentioned in this list that you may not have known.

DONATING YOUR OLD BELONGINGS RESPONSIBLY
An estimated 80% of Americans participate in spring cleaning annually – but with the U.S. generating 46 pounds of e-waste and trashing 81.5 pounds of textiles per person each year, it’s important we’re responsible with how we declutter. Ninety-two cents of every dollar generated at Goodwill of Greater Detroit stores supports metro Detroiters in need. Here are some tips from Jeff Ukrainec, Vice President of Donated Goods at Goodwill of Greater Detroit, on how spring cleaners can responsibly dispose of their decluttered items:
Reuse or repurpose items, seek hassle-free donation centers, schedule a donation pick-up, know which items are in high-demand, and RESEARCH the impact of your donation! Not all drop-off bins are what they claim to be. More info about clothing donation bins can be found at the Michigan Government website HERE. Get creative with your findings that are worth keeping to make some upcycled art and/or fashion with found materials!
