When the customer shopping is done for the day, several thrift stores in Metro Detroit have staff & volunteers working behind the scenes to ensure underserved community members get proper assistance as well as the extra clothing.

SERVICES TO ENHANCE POTENTIAL (STEP)
Metro Detroit nonprofits to celebrate National Thrift Store Day 2024 work to help many individuals get on their feet, including those people with disabilities. STEP serves over 1,300 individuals with disabilities and other mental health needs in Wayne and Macomb Counties. Its three thrift stores employ 110 individuals, most of whom have developmental disabilities. The thrift stores (Wayne, Southgate, Dearborn Heights) offer employment, valuable life skills, and job training. Proceeds from these sales directly support STEP’s programs. JOY THRIFT
Hopefully, you understand the true joy of thrifting shopping in Detroit and nearby goes beyond having something cool and relatively cheap in your closet. Take a deeper look at metro Detroit nonprofits this year with Joy Thrift in Hamtramck, just outside of Detroit. This treasure trove for amazing prices and super kind staff keeps happiness circulating. This 501(c)3 tax-exempt non-profit thrift store pays it forward once their necessary bills are paid. Joy Thrift’s profits go towards their community efforts. Since it’s a volunteer-based staff, you can always join! Donations are accepted in-store. PUBLIC THRIFT
We had to include Public Thrift in another list because of their humanitarian efforts. Not to mention, they host several opportunities for you to find a bunch of thrifted clothes for generously low prices. Public Thrift has seen its own physical transformation through building & rebuilding. The list of affordable & sustainable shopping opportunities from this worker-cooperative store are endless! Their business lovingly supports the local community and their workers. Public Thrift partners with mutual aid groups and nonprofits to donate excess items. THE FORMER, YORK PROJECT
Together, creative minds can work to serve loads of love to the community. The York Project ran a “Social Streetwear” brand from Detroit. Besides selling cool men’s clothing, this Detroit brand existed for more then 10 years to create jobs and provide opportunities for those in the community that may not otherwise exist. Throughout their 10 years, their community service work surpassed 1k hours and over $100k donations to serve the Detroit non-housed.
