May is a busy month! Make time for all of the unique ways to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2024 in Detroit. Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is observed from May 1 to May 31. Celebrated annually, it’s a month to appreciate the diverse range of AAPI cultures, histories, and stories of more than 20.6 million Americans per the U.S. Census.

You’ll find a beautiful blend of traditional and contemporary celebrations. In the city of Detroit, you can support the design & mind behind climbing pants made by women for women, take a trip to the DIA, and explore Eastern Market Night Markets (an integral part of Asian culture & cuisine). Join events with Asian food pop-ups, learn a traditional craft, and make some new connections in & around the Detroit Asian community! There’s so much to learn and love.

First up on this list of ways to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2024 is supporting WOC/the Asian community of entrepreneurs in Detroit. Sara Chen is the founder of Pangoo Apparel and is redefining outdoor apparel design & creation. Backed by a woman’s perspective on clothes/WOC, expect quality products that support real women’s bodies in motion. Not to mention, an emphasis on the stories of women who have traditionally existed in the margins.

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, the DIA and DIA’s auxiliary group Friends of Asian Art and Cultures are bringing together AAPI community groups and professional artists to showcase a blend of traditional and contemporary dance, musical performances, art, and more. Ways to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Detroit include popping in on Wed, May 8 (Spot Lite) and Thurs., May 16 (Eastern Market) for Chi Fan Le’s pop-up experience! “Chi Fan Le” means time to eat in Mandarin. Diversify your idea of typical Chinese food with gluten-free vegetarian dumplings. Watch owner Angela Chi with her wok. Sautéed smoky flavors are then infused into shiitake mushroom, carrots, napa cabbage, and tofu with open flames. Detroit has a signature way of celebrating community. Bring your family along for AAPI Heritage Night at Comerica Park With The Detroit Tigers and Little Asian Bites. Watch the Detroit Tigers while sporting the AAPI-themed Tigers hat that comes with each ticket. A portion of each ticket will go towards supporting Little Asian Bites.
