Detroit A.K.A ‘Motown’ is also home to the ever-popular Detroit Jazz Festival. Detroiters Unify Over Music. Warm up to this fall playlist 2023 with scents of Motown classics, including Detroit jazz favorites. Some of the best Autumn songs are deliberately about fall while others simply sound extra soothing during these cool months. Some also are about “falling,” which oftentimes in music is about love.

Seasonal playlists are a great way to get yourself and others into a new headspace, especially when the holiday season is fast approaching. Find some comfort in Jazz, Soul, R&B, and all other bluesy grooves. After all, the city can be filled with chaotic noise, whether it’s cars rushing or crowds of people shopping in brisk air. Many greats have captured the feeling of fall through the senses and the altering moods that accompany this time.

Light some fall-scented candles and create a relaxing space for yourself and your family to enjoy the classics. In case the  “Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett is still stuck in your head, Detroitisit rounded up a fall playlist 2023 of  Motown classics with an Autumnal flair.

AUTUMN IN NEW YORK-ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG

Let’s hear it for Ella Fitzgerald’s legacy as a talented American songstress despite not being a Detroit native. This slow-moving 1957 rendition paints an Autumnal scene of New York. However, city life can be applied to the city of Detroit as well. After all, Ella Fitzgerald shared her delightful jazz vocals with many Detroit crowds throughout her boisterous career. According to the local news (WXYZ), Ella was a crowd-pleaser in Detroit’s Paradise Valley, known as Black Bottom during the 1930’s, 40’s, and 50’s as well as frequently performing at elegantly historic venues such as Graystone Ballroom, Fox Theatre, Music Hall and the Paradise Theater (now called Orchestra Hall).

WHAT’S GOING ON-MARVIN GAYE

Marvin Gaye just radiates something uplifting no matter what season or time of day. He also captures the aliveness of R&B/Soul, which is a nice contrast to the “death” of the sunnier seasons that bring forth life. Released on May 21, 1971, What’s Going On became Gaye’s Top 10 entry on the Billboard Top LPs, peaking at number six. This Autumn/Fall playlist is lighting a match to your favorite Motown songs. Enjoy some Detroit soul food to go with this Detroit soul song.

BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER-ARETHA FRANKLIN

A list of any Motown classics or Detroit songs wouldn’t be complete without the “Queen of Soul”, Aretha Franklin.
