BASKETBALL IN CHANDLER PARK DETROIT

Basketball courts in Detroit and other outdoor developments and community facilities help provide a much-needed outlet for Detroit youth as well as any age! Outdoor basketball courts in Detroit have been popping up more since 2018, including a planned upgrade of 80+ outdoor courts in Detroit. Unsurprisingly, the Detroit Pistons have helped with the multi-million dollar investment.

Whether you’re looking for recreational basketball, are an avid player looking for more pickup basketball opportunities, or are just curious about what’s happening in the Detroit parks you love, you’ll find colorful courts with room to explore.

Detroitisit rounded up some of the most popular outdoor basketball courts in Detroit as well as other outdoor activity spaces to keep in mind as we head into summer.

CHANDLER PARK

In 2021, Detroiters got creative and passionate about providing ways to get moving amid quarantine upheavals. Former Detroit Piston and NBA Hall of Famer Grant Hill teamed up with sportswear brand Fila to help pass on the basketball stardom dream to kids on Detroit’s Eastside. Fila and The Tamia & Grant Hill Foundation in partnership with the City of Detroit Parks, Recreation Division, and the Chandler Park Conservancy unveiled the new basketball courts which were built from the ground up in true Detroit fashion. Complete with new surfaces and backboards, a celebratory opening of the courts occurred at Chandler Park Conservancy with a 3-on-3 youth basketball tournament in September 2021.

MONROE STREET MIDWAY

The Monroe Blocks development received a transformation over the summer of ’21. Keep an eye on this popular downtown Detroit spot as it’s known to have hopping outdoor activities year-round. The midway was equipped with an outdoor roller rink, basketball courts, artwork, and much more in 2021. The area included The Rocket Mortgage Sports Zone’s four half-courts and a secondary sports court. It was such a hit that the same festivities were brought back for 2022. Although nothing has been announced for this summer, it’s good to know! Monroe Street Midway has plenty to offer for family playtime.

4TH STREET CHARLOTTE PARK

Look out for new basketball courts in Detroit The city of Detroit took the initiative to remodel up to 60 basketball courts. This development project started in 2018 and reportedly is running through 2023. 4th St Charlotte Park offers a small recreation space featuring two basketball courts, a pavilion, and a BBQ area. Currently, there are two basketball courts. One has been remodeled with Detroit Pistons-themed bright blue-and-red asphalt, whereas the other court features chipped and cracking concrete and a rusty fence. This park also hosts one of Elevate Detroit’s Communi-D areas, where the community gets together to have monthly barbecues. Great for summer!
