Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed the month of September to be Hispanic Heritage Month. Celebrate and honor the rich history of people without borders, including the recognition of our diverse community of Hispanics in Detroit & Latin Americans as well as those across the United States.

Detroit is deeply connected to these cultural roots in the specific area known as Southwest Detroit as it’s been a large migratory location for immigrants seeking jobs/a more prosperous way of living. The next generation is leading with personal stories, achievements, education/research, and more.

September is extra significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries including: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th.
