Look up to the sky! The 4th of July celebrations have already taken flight. Look out for this list as well for fun family gathering spots in Detroit to spend the day at. It’s not uncommon to begin the festivities before this special summer day and carry on the fun after the last sparks on Tuesday night have flown.
Did you catch the incredible spirit of the 2023 Ford Fireworks show on June 26 that could be seen from Hart Plaza, Spirit Plaza, and Belle Isle? There will be plenty more opportunities between now and next Tuesday, July 4 in Michigan. Unwind during the day with BBQs, picnics at public parks, playground fun, spacious green areas, cool drinks, some water activities, and great people.

DETROIT RIVERWALK PARK
Find a spot and let the family wander! The riverfront is a great place to enjoy some sun and water before the fireworks. You and our friends and family can even scope out other areas that are prime for gathering on the grass. After all, there’s 5 1/2 miles to soak in by the river. Several gorgeous locations are surrounding the water including Canada! Check out the benches facing the river that are spread out throughout the riverfront. Numerous parks and verdant areas are along the stretch from the Ambassador Bridge to Gabriel Richard Park. Take your little ones to the beach, the children’s musical garden, or the community barbecue pavilion.

CAPITOL PARK
Perhaps you’re just looking for a nice picnic spot with your buddies on the fourth of July. Capitol Park is a perfect gathering spot with access to city food. Surrounded by restaurants and cafes, you’ll have plenty of original options for your simplistic picnic. Gathering spots in Detroit to celebrate this 4th of July doesn’t necessarily have to be huge event spaces. Some family and friends are just planning on a small gathering outside with good food. Check out this revamped Grandmont-Rosedale park full of color and fun for all ages. This small community park has space for everyone to spread out, along with tables and grills available for multiple events. Stoepel Park has walking trails suitable for bikes. Kids can play on the two playgrounds, ball fields, soccer field, basketball court, tennis courts, and plenty more!

ROUGE PARK
For some of us, the Fourth of July in Detroit is about going big or going home. This list of gathering spots in Detroit wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Detroit’s biggest park, Rouge Park. This urban park is a perfect space to bring your whole family. Rouge Park also has two Olympic-sized swimming pools, the Buffalo Soldier horse stables, and trails galore.

WILLIAM G. MILLIKEN STATE PARK AND HARBOR
William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor is another family favorite to relax at. Enjoy the waterfront views with the cobbled and popular Detroit Riverwalk running through. Its centerpiece is the Milliken State Park Lighthouse, a 63-foot lighthouse that overlooks the Detroit River. The park comprises of the St. Aubin Park and Marina, and much of the parks portion has been redeveloped and restored as wetlands. Take a bike ride through the park’s wetlands and admire public art, including a curious sculpture of a Man of Steel with pipes protruding from his body.
